I usually don't post the artwork that I've done in my foundations art class, but I wanted to post this.
As you can see, it is a zero dollar bill... I started with a regular one dollar bill, and worked my butt off in photoshop for a long time, for about a week or so.
The thoughts I had for it were sort of two-fold: For one, if you think about it, money really is an abstract sort of thing. I mean, money really isn't actually worth anything- it is just paper and we make it worth something because the governement places a value on it. I just think its interesting to look at it from that angle. The other thing has to do with how our society (America, and other countries too), puts such an importance on money. Everything is about money- working longer hours, getting that bonus, buying all of this material stuff; for what? To be more "succesfful", to become an "elite" of society and be rich? Is that what is important in life these days?
That being said, creating this was not as easy as you may think! I couldn't just erase the old numbers and text and then type in new stuff. I would have to delete the area where the old text was, and then make a new background that fit and meshed with the existing one. Then I had to create the new numbers and text. I actually made the "z" and the "r" from parts of the "one". So I don't know it may look simple but I tried to make it look as real as possible, and I took great care in detail. I worked in a 1200 resolution too! But anyways, here it is:
ps. If you are offended or something and consider this "defacing" money, well it's art to me so
Across the globe, 27 million men, women, and children live in some form of slavery. That is more people at this moment than in all the centuries of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Something must be done. This contest serves two purposes: Raising awareness about human trafficking and raising funds for the Not For Sale organization.
Open to all mediums. Deadline is March 10, 2010 @ 11:59pm PST.
